이것도 평일인 오늘 휴가 써가면서 겨우 보러 갔다.
DVD로 사 놓고 뜯지도 않은지 몇 년이나 지났구나.
스크린으로 볼 수 있는 드문 기회라 놓치기 싫었다.

듀크의 얼굴이 클로즈업될 때마다 코 끝이 찡했다.
듀크 팬으로서 당연하지 않은가.
그의 마지막 영화. 그것도 이런 역할. 암으로 죽어가는 전설적인 총잡이 J.B. 북스.

듀크는 언제나 듀크.
그만의 목소리, 그만의 말투, 그만의 제스처.

다만 여기서의 듀크는 문자 그대로 죽어가는 듀크다.
카슨 시티에 처음 도착해서 말에서 내릴 때,
예전에 늘 그랬듯 그 긴 다리로 유연하게 스윽 땅으로 내려서는 게 아니라
발 받침 위로 천천히 내려서는 걸 보면서 눈물이 고인 건
극장 안에서 우리 뿐이었으려나.

영화 처음에 J.B. 북스의 과거를 보여주는데
듀크가 출연했던 영화들에서 그냥 가져다 쓴 듯.
평생에 걸쳐 서부극에 출연한 듀크니까 가능한 일이 아니었나 싶다.
예상 못한 팬서비스(?)였는데, 그 중의 한 장면은 틀림없이 [리오 브라보]였다고 확신.
IMDb 찾아보니 Red River (1948), Hondo (1953), Rio Bravo (1959), El Dorado (1966) 에서 가져다 썼다고 한다.

1. JOHN WAYNE, THE SHOOTIST
I hit my local indie video store last night so I could re-watch The Shootist for this piece. Directed by Don Siegel, the man behind Dirty Harry, this is a perfectly calibrated farewell movie for Hollywood’s ultimate movie star. There are many parallels with Gran Torino, which I will detail in a separate piece. Wayne plays legendary gunfighter J.B. Brooks who is dying of “a cancer” (as diagnosed by Jimmy Stewart as Doc Hostetler), and he clearly dictates the terms of his own death, going out in a blaze of glory. At one point, Harry Morgan (Colonel Potter from M*A*S*H), says to Brooks, “Keeping you alive long enough to die natural is costin’ the tax payers a pretty penny. You’ve plain plumb lived out your time.” In that moment, you get a hint about how Wayne may be viewing himself at the age of 69. He tells us it’s time to go, and he does it his way.

캐롤 역으로 인상적인 -- 하기야 그 영화에서 깊은 인상을 남기지 않는 게 있기나 하던가 -- 모습을 보였던 여배우 Tuesday Weld의 어록 가운데 이런 게 있었다.

[about Elvis Presley] He walked into a room and everything stopped. Elvis was just so physically beautiful that even if he didn't have any talent . . . just his face, just his presence. And he was funny, charming, and complicated, but he didn't wear it on his sleeve. You didn't see that he was complicated. You saw great needs.

듀크는 슈퍼스타 중의 슈퍼스타, 헐리우드의 전설이니까.

올해도 어김없이 나오셨다. 사실 상 자체에는 별로 관심 없고, 이런 거 보려고 오스카 시상식 본다.


1. 조지 클루니가 나와서 소개한 [오스카 80년] 클립 중에서.
이거 듀크가 79년 오스카 시상식에 작품상 시상하러 나왔던 모습이다.
마지막으로 대중 앞에 모습을 보였던 때였고,
여전히 아름답지만 너무나 수척해서 팬으로서 눈물없이 보기 힘든 장면이기도 하다.
몇 달 후 그는 세상을 떠났다.

파일에서 소리는 삭제했다. 내가 싫어하는 [타이타닉]의 주제가가 깔리고 있기 때문이다.

Denzel Washington Remains America’s Favorite Movie Star

Even Though He Hasn’t Made a Movie since 1976, John Wayne Remains on the List at Number Six

Whether it was his appearances in American Gangster or The Great Debaters, Denzel Washington scores the top position as America’s favorite movie star for the second year in a row on The Harris Poll’s annual favorite movie star list. In second place, also for the second year in a row, is Charlie Wilson’s War, or rather, Tom Hanks. Perhaps due to the success of the final Pirates of the Caribbean or his singing skills in Sweeney Todd, Johnny Depp moves from a seventh place tie to third place this year. Finishing out the top five are a Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts (#4), and one of the Men in Black, Will Smith (#5), who were each tied for fifth place on last year’s list.

These are the results of a nationwide Harris Poll of 1,114 U.S. adults surveyed online by Harris Interactive® between December 4 and 12, 2007.

Rounding out the top ten is one old standard and four movie stars who are new to the list this year, three returning after an absence and one on the list for the first time. In sixth place is John Wayne, who is the only movie star to appear on every Harris Poll top ten movie star list since it first began in 1994. And this is after having died in 1979! Tied for seventh on the list are Matt Damon, whose Bourne Trilogy may have helped him make his first appearance on the list, and an old James Bond, Sean Connery. At number nine is Miss Congeniality herself, Sandra Bullock, and at number ten is Bruce Willis, who returns after a seven year absence and, perhaps coincidently, had a new Die Hard movie released this past summer.

Four actors have also dropped off the list this year. This year, Clint Eastwood (#4 last year), Mel Gibson (tied for #7), George Clooney (#9) and Harrison Ford (#10) were all off the list. While three of the actors did not have any new movies released during 2007, George Clooney did have two, Ocean’s 13 and Michael Clayton, so it is somewhat surprising to see him drop off.

Different groups have different favorite movie stars. For men, Denzel Washington is their favorite while women cite Tom Hanks as their favorite. Age also has some differences. For the two younger generations, Echo Boomers (those aged 18-30) and Generation X (those aged 31-42), Johnny Depp emerges as the favorite. Baby Boomers (those aged 43-61) say Denzel Washington is their favorite movie star. Denzel Washington is also the favorite for Matures (those aged 62 and older), but he ties with Tom Hanks in this oldest generation.

One’s favorite movie star also changes depending on region. In the East, Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks are tied for favorite while Tom Hanks stands alone on top in the Midwest. In the West it’s Johnny Depp, while Will Smith is the favorite in the South.

Republicans, Democrats and Independents not only support different political candidates, they also have different favorite movie stars. For Republicans, Tom Hanks is the favorite, while for Democrats it’s Denzel Washington. Independents say Johnny Depp is their favorite.
