용서를 한다는 것은 지금까지 내가 생각했던 어려움과는 전혀 다른 부분에 도달한다. 지향하던 인간상에 반대하더라도, 용서하고 싶지 않은 것이 있다는 것은 무척이나 난감한 일이다. 문제는 그럼에도 불구하고 용서에의 노력을 기울이고 싶지 않은 마음이라는 것이다.

Why we were able to kill a smallpox.

Most of people say the human history is the chronicle of war. But an epidemic had tremendous effect on human history as much as war did.
The smallpox is one of the most dreadful diseases. Its lethality is mostly 30%, but when the people's immunity is weak, It goes up to 90%.
Also it has a horrifying era which killed a whole ethnic group of american indian. "As late as the 18th century, smallpox killed every 10th child born in Sweden and France. During the same century, every 7th child born in Russia died from smallpox." 1) Everyone was terrified of the smallpox utill 20th century.
But we are living in the 21st century, and people does not really care about the smallpox anymore. How was it possible to erase this disease in people's fear?
   The first solution is a discovery of vaccine by Edward Jenner. "Noting the common observation that milkmaids did not generally get smallpox, Jenner theorized that the pus in the blisters which milkmaids received from cowpox (a disease similar to smallpox, but much less virulent) protected the milkmaids from smallpox."2)

천연두의 피해
　이처럼 높은 치사율을 보이는 천연두는 영국의 제너(1749∼1823)의 종두법으로 환자발생률이 급속히 감소했다. 영국에서 연간 2000여명에 달하던 사망자가 600명으로 감소했다. 종두는 급속히 보급되어 전세계 모든 나라의 어린이들이 종두를 접종하게 되었고, 1977년에는 마침내 세계에서 천연두 환자가 더이상 발생하지 않았다. 그리하여 세계보건 기구에서는 1980년에 공식적으로 천연두의 완전소멸을 선포했다.
　우리나라는 송촌 지석영(1855∼1935) 선생에 의해 보급되어 1959년 마지막 두창 환자가 보고된 뒤로 새 환자가 발생하지 않았다. 그리하여 1979년부터 예방접종이 중단되었으며, 1993년에는 천연두를 제1종전염병에서 삭제하여 법적으로도 사망선고를 내렸다.

1980년 5월 8일 세계보건기구는 지구상에서 천연두가 완전히 퇴치되었음을 선언했다. 하나의 전염병이 완전히 정복된 이와 같은 일은 인류 역사상 처음 있는 일이었으며, 보건의료분야의 역사적인 쾌거로 기록되고 있다.
천연두는 오랫동안 인간이 가장 두려워하던 질병 중의 하나였으며, 18세기 서구사회에서 가장 중요한 어린이 사망원인 중의 하나이기도 했다. 그런 질병이 이처럼 성공적으로 퇴치될 수 있었던 데에는 18세기 말 제너(Edward Jenner, 1749-1823)에 의한 우두법의 개발과 그것의 광범위한 보급이 이루어졌기 때문이다. 우두법은 19세기부터 점차 보급되기 시작하여 20세기 후반에 이르러서는 사실상 세계 모든 지역에 구석구석까지 보급되었다.
천연두가 이처럼 성공적으로 퇴치될 수 있었던 것은 천연두의 전염성이 특별히 강하지는 않았고, 동물숙주가 있지도 않았고, 쉽게 발견되고 진단되었으며, 사람들에 의해 매우 경계되었다는 점 등 다른 전염병들과 사정이 좀 달랐기 때문이기도 했지만 역시 효과적인 백신의 개발과 그것의 광범위한 보급을 그 가장 중요한 이유로 꼽지 않을 수 없다.
천연두의 완전 정복은 다른 전염병의 퇴치에 대해서도 희망을 가지게 하는 근거로 계속해서 거론되고 있다.
