"Slip Jig" focuses on the highly syncopated 9/8 feel characteristic of that Irish folk dance, with elusive, unpredictably winding melodic lines over an angular, syncopated backup.

The distinctive rhythm of the "Sarabande" is an emphasis on the second of three beats. This dance, which was actully brough back to Europe from Central America in the 1600's, often has a slow, somber, almost mournful quality. After a Baroque inspired opening, this Sarabande wanders into more contemporary, increasingly passionate territory before inevitably retreating to a final statement in the cello with plucked piano strings suggesting a harpsichord.

"Backstep" refers to a step in lively 2/4 Appalachian folk dances that is often reflected in the accompanying music by an extra, irregular beat, giving musical backsteps a "crooked" feel. To simulate the distinctive sound of this genre, the strings almost constantly drone an open A while playing their melodies, and the piano strings are muted with a towel to recall an open-backed banjo.

It's been suggested that the brutality of the 20th century killed the "Waltz", or at least reduced it to a ghostly half-life of sentimental, bittersweet memories - an Old World souvenir from a moreinnocent, elegant time. With this notion in mind, I wrote a waltz that drifts in and out of the angst-ridden present, at times indulging in nostalgic reverie with varying degrees of conviction. 

"Disco Boogie" pay homage to the much maligned music of the disco era. Ironically derided as synthetic, artificial drivel, this music was some of the last popular music to make full-fledged use of acoustic, orchestral instruments, with soaring string melodies over the insistent stride beat. I simply couldn't resist!

Danceband was written for and dedicated to The Ahn Trio through a commission from The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts. It's a work that represents my long, fruitful, and ongoing collaboration with my dear friends the Ahns, who have been one of the most significant driving forces for my mucial creativity throughout my career.

믿음은 기다림. 나의 시간을 접고 하나님의 시간을 기다림이다. 시간의 속도를 느끼면서 불안해 하는 순간 믿음은 사라지리. 믿음은 시간을 평안케 하는 힘. 비록 내가 느끼기엔 느릴지라도, 하나님을 기다리는 모든 시간은 새창조의 순간이 분명하리. 기다리는 믿음이 없다면 어찌 하나님을 사랑하며 이웃을 사랑할까. 느림과 빠름이라는 속도감은 부족한 믿음에서 비롯되는 것. 하나님의 시간을 기다리면서 하나님의 이야기를 만들어 간다면, 이미 나는 천국을 사는 것.

" 내가 여호와를 기다리고 기다렸더니..."(시40:1)

기다림은 가장 불편한 시간이다. 기다리는 시간이 사회적 지위가 높거나 개인의 능력이 클수록 짧아지는 요즘엔 더욱 기다림이 힘들다. 아무리 기다림을 미화해도 기다리는 사람은 결코 아름답게 느끼지 못한다. 훗날에서야 기다림이 얼마나 의미가 있는지, 얼마나 행복한 시간인지를 회고하지 기다리는 시간 동안에는 결코 기쁠 수가 없다. 

그 청년은 결혼해서 가정을 꾸리고 싶은데 남자를 만나지 못해서 고민이다. 가끔 주변의 소개나 업무와 연관해서 데이트를 하곤 하지만 서론에서 다 끝나버렸다. 교회 안에서 만날까 싶어 조심스레 살펴보았지만 마음에 드는 사람이 없어서 마음을 접었다고 한다. 남들은 쉽게 하는 결혼이 본인에겐 왜 그리 어렵느냐고 푸념한다. 때론 하나님께도 불만이다.

기다리라고 권면했다. 뻔한 권면이라 나나 그 청년이나 싱겁긴 했지만, 기다릴 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 문제는 기다리는 시간을 어떻게 보내느냐이다. 훗날에, 지금의 기다림을 행복한 시간이라고 회고할 수 있으려면 기다림의 내용을 만들어야 하기 때문이다. 바라는 바를 포기하고서 이제나 저제나 하면서 시간을 보낸다면 기다림의 의미는 전혀 없을 것이다. 비록 기다림이 시간이 행복의 내용 중에서 가장 박대를 당하긴 하지만, 기다림은 바라는 바와 같은 라인에 있어야 하고, 바라는 바를 언제든지 맞이할 수 있도록 준비를 하는 것이다.

조심해야 할 것은 기다리는 시간은 돈이나 그 밖의 세속적인 가치로 환산해선 안될 일이다. 기다리는 시간이 다른 사람과 비교해서 더 길다고 해서 열등감이나 좌절감을 가져선 안된다. 무언가를 기다리고 있는 시간은 무언가를 끝내고 다른 무언가를 시작할 중간기이다.

특히 결혼이나 취업은 한 인간의 삶에서 전환점이 된다. 근데 기다림이 없이 덜컥 결혼을 하거나 취업을 한다면 새로운 생활과 부대끼게 될 뿐만 아니라, 이후 연속되는 새로운 삶의 환경과도 부대껴서 결코 행복할 수 없게 된다. 아이를 가지는 것도 그렇다. 사람들은 허니문 베이비라고 해서 좋아하지만, 결혼을 하자마자 아이를 가지게 되면, 부부가 서로를 전적으로 알아 가는데 있어서나 새로운 삶을 행복하게 누리는데 있어 지장을 받을 수가 있다. 결혼을 하고서 3개월 이상의 허니문이 있은 후에 아이를 가지는 게 좋다고 생각한다.

사람들이 기다리지 못하는 것은 마음이 분주해서다. 하나님을 믿지 않는 사람들이야 빨리빨 리가 ‘능력’으로 취급을 받으니까 그렇다고 하지만, 하나님을 믿는 사람조차도 빨리빨리 병에 걸려 있다. 결혼을 위해 기도를 하고나면 바로 결혼할 사람이 나타날 것이라고 여긴다. 그러다 누군가를 만나면 하나님이 주신 응답이라 믿어 버리고 데이트를 시작한다. 그러나 하나님이 주신 응답이 아니라 자신의 마음에서 비롯된 것인 경우가 많다. 그러나 헤어지고 또 기도하고 또 만나서 또 헤어지다가, 나중에는 나이가 차서는 신중한 마음이 없이 ‘가벼이’ 결혼을 해버린다. 어떻게 결혼을 하든 결혼을 했다면 그 사람은 하나님이 택하신 사람이 분명하다. 문제는 결혼의 질과 이후에 펼쳐질 결혼생활의 질이다.

기다림의 내용이 곧 기다림이 끝난 이후의 내용을 결정짓는다. 누군가에게 배운 이론이 아니라 내가 경험을 한 것이고, 말씀으로 깨달은 것이다. 아담이 하나님께 이끌려 잠든 것이나, 이삭이 리브가를 오랫동안 기다렸던 것이나, 하나님과 이스라엘과의 관계에서도 -법적인-결혼을 하기까지는 긴 기다림의 이야기가 있다. 시간을 죽이는 기다림이 아니라, 순간의 기다림을 영원한 기쁨으로 일치시키는 이야기가 있다.


요즘 나는 몇 가지를 기다리고 있다.
하루에도 몇번씩 마음이 왔다갔다 한다. 조급한 마음과 느긋한 마음...
기다림 가운데 내 마음의 궁금증이 있다.

하나님의 때가 아직 아니라서 이 기다림이 지속되고 있는가,
아니면 나의 게으름과 죄, 자신없음이 하나님의 일의 진행을 막고 있는가.

정말 최선을 다해야 하는데, 그게 되지 않아 더 힘들다고 하는 것이 맞을 것 같다.
자신이 없어 부딪히기 싫어해서 움직이지 않아 진행되는 것이 보이지 않는 것이 맞을 것이다.

내가 최선을 다해 하루를 산다면, 정말 기다릴 수 있을 것 같다.
하지만 최선을 다하지 않은 채 그냥 되는 대로 산다면 그것은 기다림이 아니다.

그 친구를 기다리는 마음도 그럴 것이다.
아직 내 마음이 기다림으로 확정되지 않아 마음이 분주한 것일 것이다.
기다림이 아닌 것이다.
기다림은 간절히 바라고 기다리는 것이다.

특정한 사람을 향한 기다림이 아닌,
나의 배우자를 향한 기다림으로 하루하루를 최선을 다하자.

나는 아직 준비되지 않았다. 남편으로 한 여자를 사랑하며 하나님의 일을 같이 품는 게... 그건 내 자신이 안다.

내가 하나님 앞에 바로 선다면, 나의 배우자는 내게 올 것이다. 아니 내가 알아볼 것이다.

기다림 가운데, 역동성을...
